When the ancient Polynesians invented surfing, they often used a paddle to help them navigate. Fast-forward a few millennia, and Stand-Up Paddleboarding, or SUP, finds itself trendy again. Part of its increasing popularity is that standing upright allows surfers to spot waves more easily and thus catch more of them, multiplying the fun factor. Paddling back to the wave becomes less of a strain as well. The ability to cruise along on flat inland water, surveying the sights, is another advantage. Finally, its a good core workout. If youre sold on the idea, schedule an intro SUP lesson, free with board and paddle rental, and you may find yourself riding the waves like a Polynesian king.More
Many of us remember coming home from our elementary schools with freshly glazed pinchpots, cups, or whatever else our young imaginations could conjure up. Saturday mornings at the Randall Museum can bring that memory back, or create a new one for the youngsters. Ceramics make great gifts — especially on Mothers' and Fathers' Day. Hop on board for the Randall's once-weekly class, and for $6 and two weeks to have your work fired and glazed, you'll have all the materials you need.More
December is almost over - the New Year is coming up and everyone is busy drying off from the rain or holiday shopping. Let's take a look at what's happened this month.
Good Vibrations has been a San Francisco favorite since 1977 for good reason: It's always helped us learn about sex and sexuality outside of that yucky shameful place so many people put it, and it keeps us from taking it all too seriously.

Madge Gets Stupid: Five Dumb Things Madonna Has Said Lately

When Madonna goes dumb, it's like everything else she does in her life -- she goes for gold. Of course, we know that Madge has had a ton of inspiring, empowering and intelligent moments in the course of her career, too. And of course we know that nobody's perfect. But lately, the outspoken singer seems to have been getting her dumb on more than ever before. Here are our favorite recent Madonna quotes that are jaw-droppingly stupid:
1. "We have a black Muslim in the White House -- Amazing shit!"
Of course, this is the quote that inspired us to do this list in the first place. Referring to Obama as a Muslim from a Washington D.C. stage this week, Madonna looked more clueless than ever before. She has since claimed that she was "being ironic," but we're not so sure. Watch the video -- she looks more carried away than anything else, and she refers to the fact that she's feeling "dizzy" before she gets all nonsensical. Maybe she'd just watched Fox News in too many hotel rooms and her brain got scrambled under the stage lights or something.
2. "Tom [Cruise] is a good person. I think
he gets a raw deal, just as I think the orphans in Malawi get a raw
deal; just as I think a lot of marginalized people get a raw deal."
Comparing Tom Cruise's (perceived) struggles with those of children living in Malawi orphanages (many of whom are there because their parents died of AIDS) isn't just incredibly dumb, it minimizes the unbelievable hardships those kids go through, while simultaneously giving Cruise -- one of the richest and most powerful white males on the planet -- a sort of martyr position. Yeah. Because people say mean things about him sometimes. Boo-frickin-hoo. Madonna had already adopted her son David from Malawi when this quote emerged in a 2008 issue of New York, so Lord knows what she was thinking. Oh, right -- she wasn't.
3. "People spend $300 on crazy things all the time -- things like handbags. So work all year, scrape the money together, and come to my show. I'm worth it."
And this was the point that we realized that Madonna had lost touch entirely. Remember when she used to stand up for the little people? Remember when she still understood struggle? Well, when this popped out of her mouth, she started sounding a little too much like Mitt Romney for our tastes. Only a one-percenter would brazenly tell a nation of people dealing with high unemployment rates and a never-ending recession to spend all year saving up their pennies to go look at her for two hours. Patronizing, insulting and dumb, da-dumb-dumb!
4. "How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?"

Seeing Madonna yelling this inane question at a sea of dance music fans at the Ultra Music Festival last March was a real forehead-slapper. Not only were Deadmau5 and Paul van Dyk right to call her out on trying to make drugs look cool to a field full of teenagers, but, more than anything, this moment made Madonna resemble your drunk aunt at a wedding, trying to hip-hop dance with the younger folk in the room to prove she's still "down with the kids." Embarrassing and irresponsible and, oh yeah, dumb. 5. "One of the biggest problems in the world right now is nuclear waste... That's something I've been involved in for a while with a group of scientists -- finding a way to neutralize radiation."

No, no. This actually happened. In 2006, Madonna was literally trying to solve the Earth's nuclear waste problems. And, according to Britain's The Sunday Times, she was trying to do so with -- this is the really fun part -- "Kabbalah fluid." The paper also reported that Madge had approached a variety of British government agencies and Russian scientists in her pursuit of saving the planet. Which is about as useful as splashing evil dictator bastards with holy water, in the hopes that it will wash away all their badness. Dumb.
Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'.
Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
