G-Mo Skee: Sweet victory.
  • G-Mo Skee: Sweet victory.

G-Mo Skee, the Richmond-based rapper who released an incendiary video last week called "Bay Area Dropout" as a reaction to not making last year's "Freshmen 10" list of up-and-coming hip-hop artists, was ironically just named one of this year's Freshmen 10.

The annual list is determined by a combination of public votes and a private "tastemaker" panel of industry executives, previous winners, and journalists. It's organized by Matt Werner of Thizzler on the Roof and DJ Amen of KMEL, the same people who were negatively depicted in G-Mo Skee's video -- in fact, a man posing as DJ Amen is set on fire in "Bay Area Dropout."

"If something is rightfully yours, fight for it," says G-Mo Skee of his victory. "I went in on them, got a lot from it, and still made it to the list. Wombo combo."

Richmond rappers dominated this year's list: Joining G-Mo Skee are fellow residents Kool John, HBK Skipper, AkaFrank, and Smoovie Baby. Watch the full announcement of the new Freshmen 10 and see the full list below:

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
