Local Rappers Make a 49ers Anthem Out of Journey Power Ballad 'Faithfully'

Posted By on Thu, Jan 12, 2012 at 2:43 PM

The 49ers are doing well -- the team's first playoff game in nine years is happening in two days -- so naturally, Bay Area musicians are in the mood to celebrate. And as with the Giants' World Series-winning 2010 season, that means songs about the 49ers. Sometimes even cheesy songs, like this new flip on "Faithfully," the iconic Journey power ballad. Locals Equipto, Baldhead Rick, Shag Nasty, Curk Sak, Ike Plump, and Sellassie pumped up the wistful piano descent over a big beat, and feted the team that plays Candlestick with furious rhyming. If you're a Niners fan, this was made for you. And if you're not, it's at least an interesting exercise in how to somewhat salvage a cringe-inducing early-'80s hit. Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
