Oakland's MondreMAN Takes Hip-Hop into Outer Space with 'Dope Since '91' Mixtape

Oakland's Main Attrakionz are quickly becoming a known name for their ability to make weird, blunted, left-field hip-hop without losing a drop of their Bay flavor, or even worse, falling into bad "underground hip-hop" cliches. They'll rap over productions from Warp signees. They'll rock with Clams Casino. But Main Attrakionz compromise their sound for no one, and member MondreMAN's latest mixtape is proof of that.

Dope Since '91 not only hints at the primary subject matter contained within, but also reminds you just how young MondreMAN is, which makes this collection of tracks all the more impressive. Produced by the likes of Nem270 and the other half of Main Attrakionz, Squadda B, 808 rubber band drums clash against lush, dreamy, lo-fi electronic loops normally reserved for those labeled experimental or avant-garde.

Lyrically, Dope Since '91 is full of existential weed raps, best exemplified on tracks like "The Movement," which is chock full of tales about getting baked out of one's mind and then proceeding to do shit around the streets of Oakland. But mostly, this collection of tracks that has me excited for a group that's not afraid to challenge various conceptions of what hip-hop is or isn't.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
