If you're anything like me, all this talk of online competition and antitrust legislation and techno-corporate hierarchies has really whetted your taste for blood. Well, we're in luck tonight, thanks to the Tech Beat Up: a charity event, sponsored by local web series White Collar Brawler, wherein representatives of the nation's most news-making tech companies whack the shit out of each other with inflatable boxing gloves. "Who doesn't want to see a software engineer from Apple and a product manager from Google go at it (safely) for lifelong Internet glory and bragging rights?" says Nate Houghteling, co-organizer and co-star of the series.

We got one of the fighters, Anthony Ha, assistant editor of VentureBeat, to take time from his intense training and protein shake-drinking regimen in order to answer a few questions.



What can we expect from tonight's fight?

Violence. Tragedy. Heroism.

How have you been training?
I focus less on the physical aspect, since I'm already in perfect condition. It's a mental process, mostly, and thus hard to articulate. Basically I focus my hate, and then I direct it outwards.

Where did you learn to fight?
The schoolyards of Torrance, California. Also, episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (which were, not coincidentally, filmed in the schoolyards of Torrance, California).

Whom are you looking forward to fighting?
My scheduled fight is against Zynga, a company that I hate, but if I win that one I might also fight people from Apple, Google, Salesforce, Yelp and ZeroDivide. I hate all of those companies. Except for ZeroDivide, which I've never heard of. Apparently it's some kind of nonprofit.

I want you to hit me as hard as you can.
Did you feel it? Did I hurt you?

Ow. Yes. Anthony, what are you fighting for?
Ultimately, a man is only ever fighting for one thing: himself.

What secret moves has the tech world taught you?
If I told you, they wouldn't be secret, would they? Okay, fine, here's a hint: I call my signature move the carpal tunnel.

What's your favorite fight song?
"Wouldn't It Be Nice" by the Beach Boys.

The bouncy beatdown goes down tonight at 7:30 at the Rockit Room and features guest MC Ashkon, of "Don't Stop Believing" fame. Ticket costs benefit ZeroDivide, a local nonprofit. Details here. Good fight, good night.
