Get to know Girl Unit.
  • Get to know Girl Unit.
There are (at least) two perfectly planned, can't-miss parties going down this weekend, and they are profiled here for your convenience. We've alredy given you a bit of an introduction to tonight's shindig, and we've got another web-based meet and greet organized for Saturday's choice event below. Get to know these hotly tipped get-downs so that when you finally meet them on the street, you'll have no reason to be shy. Rave on.

Friday, August 27

Where: Mezzanine
When: 9 p.m. - 4 a.m.
Why: Like a televised variety show from the early '80s, The Beat Electric Dance Show has bands, DJs, hosts, and dancers, which seems perfect considering the night will all be captured on VHS. Party people from far and wide will convene at Mezzanine -- likely in their slickest, sexiest apparel -- for a night of live jackin' house tunes from Oakland's Party Effects, funky disco cuts from Tres Lingerie, sexy female-fronted electro beats from Hot Tub, and Beat Electric's hyper-knowledgeable DJ crew slangin' the best in vintage boogie, funk, and soul. Tickets for the whole night only cost five dollars at the door (it's free if you email your name to, there's talk of "basketball playing chimpanzees," and it's going off until four in the morning. There's no question about it: this is the party to be at.

Saturday, August 28

Where: 222 Hyde
When: 10 p.m. - 2 a.m.
Why: It would be safe to assume that most people living in San Francisco have no idea who Girl Unit is. So, in the interest of expanding your musical horizons, please take some time to get to know this fellow from Southeast London before he comes to S.F. for first time, and brings down the house at the award-winning Icee Hot party. The DJ/producer, born Philip Gamble, is 24 years old and he makes bass-centric club tunes that pull equally from hyperactive rap productions and bouncing house music. He released his debut EP, I.R.L., on Night Slugs merely months ago, and Gamble's Girl Unit moniker is already garnering him loads of attention across the electronic music press. If you'd like to get to know the tunesmith more intimately, check out a profile on the artist here, and a podcast he did for XLR8R here. You'll soon discover that missing his performance at Icee Hot is most certainly not in your best interest.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
