Even after his death, Jerry Garcia is still on a long, strange trip, which will make a stop at the Giants/Cubs game at AT&T Park tonight. Aligned with the 15th anniversary of his passing,
Jerry Garcia Tribute Night will be a Deadhead's delight, with family members and former bandmates in attendance. "Jerry was known over the years as being a Giants fan, performing a memorable anthem performance with Bob Weir and the late Vince Welnick at Candlestick Park in 1993," says Faham Zakariaei, the special-events manager for the baseball club. "That performance always left a positive memory in Giants and Jerry fans alike."
Though the special ticket packages that include a Jerry bobblehead commemorating the '93 anthem are sold out, attendees will be treated to a pregame performance by local Dead tribute band Cryptical; the national anthem performed by Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, and Jeff Pehrson; and a rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" during the seventh-inning stretch led by Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann that might set a world record for being the largest kazoo ensemble. "One of the most popular Giants shirts we see around the city and during games is the infamous Giants/Grateful Dead Steal Your Face collaboration design," Zakariaei says. "Seventeen years after Jerry, Bob, and Vince's anthem, that same design is still extremely popular with our fans."
