If Joanna Newsom had emerged in the 1970s, she'd likely have been on the Virgin or Harvest labels with simpatico songster-mavericks Kevin Coyne, Kevin Ayers, and Roy Harper. In 2002, Newsom -- after years studying composition and the harp in its Celtic, African, and South American manifestations -- opened shows for contemporary mavericks Will Oldham and Devendra Banhart. Joining the Drag City label, she got luminaries Van Dyke Parks and Jim O'Rourke help bring to fruition her vision of Anglo-American folk -- one that's both starkly traditional and ambitiously progressive. Newsom's latest album, Have One on Me, shows that her aspirations know few bounds -- it's three discs of her kaleidoscopic talents. How she'll manage to perform it live ought to be interesting. Find out tonight at the Fox Theater in Oakland. Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes opens.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
