SF MOMA

Better than: Being at the MOMA sans bubbly booze, artsy cakes, and "pussy, pussy, pussy" galore.

In case you haven't heard, or read the billboards, our revered downtown art institution, SF MOMA, turned 75 this year, and it's been celebrating now for months. There's great work from the museum's collection being displayed on every floor (the Barry McGee piece is particularly awesome). But on Friday night, it was all about the big ol' Birthday Bash, which went down mainly on the ground floor. That's where the MOMA hosted a variety of pretty cakes and bitty burgers, generous pours of booze, and bands--Brazilian Girls, Epee du Bois, and Rupa Marya--for fancy people dressed their artiest for the occasion.

All night, the lobby was packed with people dancing by the stage, champagne flutes in hand (and a couple crashing to the floor). But the largest bunches of arts connoisseurs were collected in the back room, around food fit for a museum, as it were. Especially the deserts.

And in case you needed some desert with your desert.

Of course all that sugar made people very thirsty....

Aside from the treats, one of the best parts of the party was the people watching, scouting for elegant dresses and costumes (two women covered their faces in white with black polka dots), or spying as folks preened for the cameras at photo booths around the museum.

It was also pretty comical to witness the performance by the Brazilian Girls. I swear the band purposely sang "Pussy" multiple times that night. Every time we looked over, the Girls' brazen frontwoman, Sabina Sciubba, was teasing her excited fans with that song's unforgettable lyrics at top volume: "pussy, pussy, pussy, marijuana."

Not your typical museum entertainment. But then again, you've gotta do something provocative when you turn 75.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
