First Listen: The New Pornographers

Posted By on Thu, Apr 29, 2010 at 9:46 AM

I don't know about you, but my S.A.D. has kicked into overdrive with this shit weather, and I've been ready for some fizzy lifting drinks news. Enter NPR to coax me from the edge, with a first listen of The New Pornographers latest album Together in its entirety. Mega posi vocals all aglow with bubbly melodies and shimmering but cleverly-crafted lyrics sweet talk me into those springtime feel-good feelings.

One song that trips me up though is "My Shepherd" as it swerves in the way of God-rock: "You made me / You're my lord / You're my shepherd." But I'm pretty sure that's just metaphor/hyperbole? Clarification, readers, is very welcome. The cover art is also a bit misleading with the snowflakes and winter wonderland imagery, because this album is all about warm worlds that inspire and praise us.

I suggest you shimmy on over to NPR for some sunny days; Together streams until its release on Tuesday, May 4.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
