The six-piece Tropicalian band Garotas Suecas broke the dreamy spell the Lumerians had created. They poured a tall, refreshing glass of funk and soul on the audience. Lead singer Guilherme Saldanha has a voice similar to Weird Al Yankovitch, but with the elegance of the Portuguese language. In-between numbers, band members spoke broken English to the audience and hurriedly muttered in Portuguese to each other.
The fun, funky beat of their music kept the audience bouncing from one foot to the other. Only a few times did they jump from Portuguese to English in their songwriting. Garocas Suecas professed their love for San Francisco early on in their set, but dedicated their encore tune to those in the audience "who are homesick for Brazil." The sweet harmonies of the men in Garocas Suecas sent the audience off into the night dreaming of exotic places.
Critic's Notebook
By the way: Lumerians have just finished recording an album they've worked on for the past couple years, and are realeasing a 7'' single that drops later this month.
One of the Garotas Suecas' tunes played last night, "Ghostwriter," can be found on B-side of their self-titled 7", which was produced and released by East Bay record label American Dust. The band is continuing on a nationwide tour of the U.S. but is expected to come back to the Bay Area this fall to record a full-length album.
