CHLLNGR is an "Island"
  • CHLLNGR is an "Island"

By now the xx's hit track "Islands" is inescapable. You've heard it once, you've heard it a billion times. But there's a reason the song's become such a hit--its cool seduction tactics partner pop subtlety with lyrics about desire taking over. CHLLNGR's Steve Borth (a former Californian who high-tailed it to Norway) gave the ubiquitous single a cool little twist. In his revision, "Islands" goes dubstep, adding electronic frost and plenty of bass while heating up lines about being "frozen by desire."

(For those heading to Austin this week, both acts will be playing various SXSW showcases. For their part, the xx will be playing our big alt weekly party on Friday at La Zona Rosa, noon- 5 p.m.)

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
