Conan O'Brien Pulls Out of SF Sketchfest

Posted By on Fri, Jan 15, 2010 at 4:46 PM

Tonight Show Host Conan O'Brien just pulled out from what was sure to be a very special tribute to his career at this weekend's SF Sketchfest. The sold out show was going to be held at the Herbst Theatre this Sunday at 2 pm. Ticket holders received the following email this afternoon from City Box Office:

"Thank you for your recent purchase of tickets for The SF Sketchfest Tribute to Conan O'Brien. Unfortunately the event has been cancelled for this Sunday. Conan O'Brien has agreed to be here for a rescheduled date.

The new date has not yet been determined. The presenters of this event ask that you hold on to your tickets or leave your tickets on will call until a new date has been scheduled. As soon as we have information on the rescheduled date we will contact you and then you can make the decision to attend the new date or get a refund on your tickets."

Festival organizers also issued the following statement, "Due to the uncertainty surrounding the future of "The Tonight Show," Conan O'Brien will have to postpone his appearance at this weekend's San Francisco Sketchfest. Conan is deeply honored to have been asked to be part of this event and intends to honor this commitment in the near future. No further details are available at this time."

Presumably, with all the drama surrounding the NBC announcement decision to move Jay Leno back to 11:30, which would bump Conan to 12:05 am. On Tuesday January 12th, Conan announced in a letter to "the people of the earth" he was instead going to quit doing the show. Of course, all of the late night hosts have been having a great time making fun of NBC's decision, including former NBC Late Night host David Letterman, who summed up the fiasco in this monologue.

All the network drama has lead to Conan fans all to band together in support of their late night laugh leader, uniting in Internet solidarity under the slogan "Team Conan." There is a Team Conan Facebook group, people are changing their Twitter avatars to "Team Conan," and all of the ways fans can support Conan are posted on the Team Conan website. (We at the SF Weekly are pretty impressed that these Conan enthusiasts are donating all the ad dollars raised to help earthquake victims in Haiti).

The SF Sketchfest is a local San Francisco sketch festival that has grown organically to become a comedic mainstay, attracting the top comedic acts and sketch troupes. While there are plenty of other great shows on the schedule, and artists in town to check out, we're pretty bummed we're not going to get a chance to see you this weekend Conan -- We'll keep you posted if we ever get those Coldplay tickets.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
