Five Things to Do On New Year's Eve for Under $20

Posted By on Tue, Dec 29, 2009 at 6:57 PM

We know what the newspapers are saying, but bank accounts don't lie - we're still in a recession. How do we say good-bye to another decade passed, without spending too much cash? The quickest solution is to find a date, a date who likes you more then you like them - and puppy dog pout your way into a free evening. If flirting your way through the evening with a butter face is not worth saving the extra cash then here are some ways to party like it's 1999 (even though it's 2009 and sadly your bank statements have not reflected the change in the decade).

1. Watch Avatar

You, some 3D glasses, and an IMAX. Sorry either popcorn or a soda, not both, that would bring you over budget. Pretend the 3D glasses are your party favor. We highly recommend screaming "Happy New Year Blue People!!!" at midnight. Cost $11 AMC Loews Metreon 16, San Francisco, CA

2. No Cover Karaoke at Jack's

Some people will be listening to their favorite bands on New Year's Eve, when they could be listening to you sing. The first person to sing "Sweet Caroline" gets to go home alone. COST: FREE 2545 24th St, San Francisco, CA

3. DJ Dance Party for only $20.

Om Records knows how to throw a party including great dj's, FREE Hors D'oeuvres, and a FREE champagne toast a midnight. Dance like no one is watching, or like everyone is on drugs.

COST: $20 Triple Crown 1760 Market Street San Francisco, CA

4. Balloon Drop at Beauty Bar

Chicken Little, the sky is not falling. Those are balloons and you are drunk. The Beauty of the Beauty Bar on NYE is for only $10 Dollars you get a FREE glass of champagne and a midnight balloon drop. COST: $10 2299 Mission St. San Francisco, Ca

5. Laugh Into the New Year at The Purple Onion

Dine, drink and laugh with SF's top underground comics including Bay Area breakout comedian Kris Tinkle. Laughter is the best medicine, and this show promises to cure a decade of bad decisions. Show ends at 10 (so after the laughter ends you'll still have plenty of time to make further bad choices). COST: $20 The Purple Onion 140 Columbus Avenue, San Francisco, CA

You can follow us on Twitter at @springfever and @sfweekly or just come see us do stand up (full-disclosure) at The Purple Onion on December 31st.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
