Track of the Day: Sub Pop Gets Strange w/ AFCGT

Posted By on Tue, Dec 22, 2009 at 12:45 PM

I like it when Sub Pop just gets totally fucking weird with its signings. Years back, the Seattle label balanced out all those nice indie pop acts with a couple black LPs of paranoid, post-punk and post-apocalyptic darkness from A Frames. Now A Frames members have morphed into a project with even fewer genre boundaries and a lot more distorted noise, leaving your head askew as AFCGT spews a caustic commotion.

AFCGT is A Frames and Climax Golden Twins (get it? AF + CGT), and they play a little something called "Drooling Hillbilly Metal, Sea Urchin Psychedelia, Yukon Freak Thrash, and Beatnik Swamp Drone," which, if you take a listen to "Two Legged Dog" you'll totally  understand. It's like Hawkwind and the Butthole Surfers battling it out in a train yard.

A self-titled full-length is coming out on Sub Pop on January 26 (digital and vinyl only; CDs will be so 2009 by then).

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
