Pickups Amnesia: Verizon Droid Launch at Bimbo's 365 Club

Posted By on Tue, Nov 10, 2009 at 4:20 PM

View more photos in "Silversun Pickups & Metric @ Verizon Droid Launch."

Indie rock music met tech at last Friday's Verizon Droid Launch at Bimbo's 365 Club in San Francisco, where Canadian Band Metric and Silverlake band Silversun Pickups played to celebrate the launch of Verizon Droid, an iPhone contender that has sold an estimated 100,000 units in its first weekend on the market and was much anticipated by key members of the technology community including Techcrunch demagogue Michael Arrington.

Yes, mobile snobs might salivate at the Droid's Google-powered navigation system, but the real question is (as always), "Will the product appeal to people beyond your average early adopter and win the hearts of mainstream users who are already pretty addicted to their 'Jesus Phones'?"

Perhaps that is why the company chose more low key (i.e. hipster) bands to helm its S.F. launch, winning over the tech savvy as well as the dillentate with it's eclectic taste. See: Weezer mySpace "Secret Shows" for another example of excellent target marketing.

Metric sparkles onstage

Let me use rest of this post to posit a theory: Our sister publication LAWeekly had an interesting run-in with the Pickups last week, which resulted in drunkeness, revelry and a torn up reporter's notebook. While I did not find a Delorean, yours truly ended up at Osha Thai (the Denny's of Thai food presumably) and don't really remember how I got home.

I wasn't even supposed to write this review; my originally assigned writer also came down with a bad case of Silversun Pickups amnesia.

My theory is the Pickups are cursed; you see a Pickups show and end up remembering, well not much, but in a good way (after all the band was named after a liquor store). Perhaps then the new Verizon Droid can help you find your way home, if not your actual memories from the concert?

In any case, you know what they say about photos (and even more so, video via Handstamp Music) ...

When No One Loves You, Corporate Email is There

Posted By on Tue, Nov 10, 2009 at 11:47 AM

In the realm of manipulative marketing tactics, it doesn't get much

better than a love letter. "Do you love J.Crew?" the email wants to

know. But before you have time to think about it, the subject line

assumes your devotion to the brand and announces, "We love you too."

jcrew.jpg

Is there anything more hollow than a proclamation of love issued by a giant, soulless clothing company to a mass email list? Maybe it's realizing that you haven't gotten an "I love you email" in your inbox in months. Actually, it might be the first one you've gotten all year, you think, as you reach for the vodka. And it's from J.Crew.

"Well, that one sweater is really great. It's timeless," you think as you take a long pull from the bottle. "Can someone fetch me my credit card? At least I can dry my big, lonely tears on a pile of cashmere."

Come to think of it, this marketing campaign actually kind of works.

Fans of beloved morning DJs Fernando and Greg took a hit when the station that housed their show, Energy 92.7, went off the air earlier this fall. The pair are so popular, though, they've already found a new home. The DJs announced through their Facebook page that they've been hired by Movin 99.7 and will be back on the air this Thursday, Nov. 12.

The Juan MacLean Lose Drummer, Alter San Francisco Show

Posted By on Tue, Nov 10, 2009 at 11:26 AM

On Sunday, The Juan MacLean's drummer, Gerhardt "Jerry" Fuchs, died in a pretty terrible accident. According to the NY Daily News, Fuchs was heading to a party in Williamsburg when the freight elevator he was taking got stuck between floors. After being trapped for 20 minutes, the paper reports, Fuchs and another partygoer tried to escape when the party organizer pulled open the elevator doors. The dummer's hoodie apparently got caught as he was leaving, and he fell 50 feet to his death.

Late yesterday the Juan MacLean issued a statement expressing great sadness for the loss of their friend (who also drummed for !!!, Maserati, LCD Soundsystem, Turing Machine, and other bands). The group also announced that it will not be performing on its upcoming tour (which hits San Francisco at Mezzanine Nov. 20) as a full band. Instead, bandleader John MacLean will be DJing a "tribute DJ set to commemorate and honor the memory of his friend and bandmate."

What To Do? Tuesday's Pick: Moon at the Red Vic

Posted By on Tue, Nov 10, 2009 at 9:00 AM

moon_image.jpg

Moon @ the Red Vic (through Wed.)

Moon is one of my favorite films of 2009. Created by David Bowie's son Duncan Jones, the movie riffs off 2001: A Space Odyssey but has its own pop culture sheen and subtle humor. Without saying too much, it's the story of astronaut Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell), whose work on the moon is not what it seems once he discovers a crash outside the safety of his solo space craft. Bell is aided by Gerty, a robot buddy voiced by Kevin Spacey who may or may not be working towards the same mission. With an eerie minimal electronic soundtrack, Moon is like a thoughtful sci-fi music video, beautifully shot and fun to watch.

The film plays at the Red Vic through Wednesday.

Track of the Day: Dead to Me

Posted By on Tue, Nov 10, 2009 at 8:30 AM

MATT REAMER

Mission punks Dead to Me have a new album out on local label Fat Wreck. Today marks the release of African Elephants, the six-year-old band's first record without original guitarist Jack. The single-named ax slinger left the fold to start a family, and Dead to Me is now a trio, comprising the other other first-name-basis dudes Chicken (bass/vocals), Ian (drums) and Nathan (guitar).

Check out a very Clash-inspired, upbeat single off African Elephants, "A Day Without a War." The song uses a pop punk chorus, gruff vocals, and a warning that we'll "never be safe again" so long as the U.S. is engaged in conflicts, calling on the punk community to use its voice to demand an end to war.

Dead to Me's CD release is this Friday, Nov. 13 at Thee Parkside with Hüsker Dü's Grant Hart.

Video of the Day (Exclusive): Themselves "Oversleeping" in Utah

Posted By on Tue, Nov 10, 2009 at 8:00 AM

Themselves - "Oversleeping" in Utah from anticon. on Vimeo.

Jel and Doseone hit the scenic expanses of Utah for a live Themselves performance--before rolling fields of grain--of their song "Oversleeping."  The song is from the duo's third album, CrownsDown, and features Themselves' signature glitchy hiphop and blink-and-you'll-miss-the-meaning rapid flow of Doseone. The rapper slows just a bit in the chorus, just long enough to impart to fans that's he's stolen his way to the top of the indie heap.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
