Involved, Socially @ Triple Base Gallery (Friday) "Triple Base's 'Involved, Socially' uses video installation, shadowplay, photography, and T-shirts to investigate the artist's process as a collaborative one. The wormholes start to form with stuff like Christine Wong Yap's mail-trading exhibit-within an-exhibit called 'This or That,' made of international post-office exchanges. David Horvitz contributes an oversize letter to the show's visual element, and leads an expedition as a happening-type conceptual contribution: an all-night art walk, which starts at 8 p.m." (Art walk goes from "dusk" on Friday to "dawn" on Saturday, and is free). Oldies Night @ the Knockout (Friday) Don your vintage best and party like the decades before you were born tonight at the Knockout. DJs Primo, Daniel, and Lost spin you back in time. With a $2 cover before 11 p.m. ($4 after), it's almost like the '50s all over again.
San Francisco Street Food Festival (Saturday) "Everyone loves to eat food in the street lately. It's all so fresh, so fancy, and so fast, just like the inaugural San Francisco Street Food Festival. On Saturday, Folsom St. closes down between 25th and 26th, the omnivores come out, and a caravan of food trailers and tents from the likes of Kasa Indian Eatery, Poleng Lounge, and Zella's Soulful Kitchen serve up handheld dishes for discerning urban palates. Ceviche, Moroccan squid salad, and handmade organic corn tortillas with slow-roasted and achiote-rubbed pork shoulder are just a few of the delights on offer from a selection of vendors spanning the culinary spectrum." (11 a.m.-7 p.m., free) Evan James
San Francisco Zine Fest @ San Francisco County Fair Building (Saturday & Sunday) "At the San Francisco Zine Fest,
more than 100 DIY entrepreneurs sell, trade, and celebrate small-press
books, comics, and exciting pamphlets. Exhibitors range from established small publishing houses like
RE/Search Publications, AK Press, and Sparkplug Comics to practically unknown but undoubtedly wonderful writers, cartoonists, and
masterminds. Panel discussions, Q&A sessions, and hands-on
workshops -- where participants can learn about the fine art of bookbinding, keeping a nature journal, or stealing paper from work --
litter the fest." (11 a.m.-6 p.m., free. The County Fair Building is at
9th Ave. & Lincoln in Golden Gate Park) Evan James
Go Bang! @ Deco Lounge (Saturday) Nu disco at an old dive: Go Bang! attracts vinyl collectors who comb the globe for the best dance tracks to serve as the Deco Lounge soundtrack. This weekend the club hosts special guest (and regular SF Weekly
contributor) Tamara Palmer, who'll bring an extra special breed of
Atomic Dancefloor Disco Action. (10 p.m., $5)
El Superritmo! @ Make-Out Room (Saturday) You really can't go wrong with this Saturday night Make-Out Room staple. El Superritmo! brings
Latin music off the streets and into the club, filling the dance floor
with the sounds of cumbia, reggaeton, salsa, and dancehall, thanks to DJ Roger Más.(10 p.m., $5)
On the Waterfront @ Union Square (Saturday) Bundle up, it's
summer. And time for another outdoor movie--this one on concrete, but
hey, that's what picnic blankets are for, right? Saturday night Union Square plays host to that old black and white Brando classic, On the Waterfront. (8 p.m., $3-$6 suggested donation)
Jay Reatard @ Amoeba S.F. (Saturday)
Jay Reatard is the Robert Pollard of the garage punk generation: a one-man
factory of lo-fi pop gems, only while Pollard's prefered pacing is
drunken, Reatard's is pure speed. Saturday he takes his record store
tour to Amoeba in San Francisco (Sunday he'll hit the one in Berekley) to promote his latest batch of insistant offerings, Watch Me Fall. (6 p.m., free).
Second Annual Rock Make Street Fair (Sunday) We're street fair spoiled in this city. Last weekend we had Indie Mart, this weekend it's Rock Make Street Fair,
another cool collision of DIY retail goods and local bands. On the bill
for Sunday's outdoor market are a dozen different acts, ranging from
post rockers (Tartufi) to folk troubadours (Emily Jane White) to
country punks (Trainwreck Riders) and indie pop masters (Rademacher) (Looks like the schedule has been altered from what hosts the Bay Bridged originally sent out. Instead you can check out The Ferocious Few, Two Sheds, Photons, and more). The party
goes down on Treat St. between 17th and 18th. (11am-6 p.m., free).
