Video/Track of the Day: Girls in "Hell"

Posted By on Wed, Jul 15, 2009 at 3:16 PM

So how do SF popsters Girls act out their vision of a "Hellhole Ratrace"? In the case of this stunning video for the band's new stunning single, that terrible, terrible fate includes lots of beautiful people getting drunk and stoned and making out with one another as they wind around living rooms, diners, and city vistas. Poor things, our ass. If that's what hell looks like, sign us up for sinner's paradise. You can download the song for free, along with its B-side, "Solitude," here.

Last Night: Blonde Redhead & Thee Oh Sees at the Independent

Blonde Redhead and Thee Oh Sees

The Independent

Better than:
Slowdive and the Cheater Slicks.

It was a strange bill, that was for sure. On one hand, you had a moody, meticulous, international trio who build lush pop songs on fragments of human and electronic languages. On the other, you had a jittery, jangly, broken-angled punk band from San Francisco cranking out twisted pop songs on fragments of rough riffs and feral yelps. And yet, somehow, last night's show with Blonde Redhead and Thee Oh Sees worked, as a synchronicity formed between two very distinct sets of musicians. One riled up the id, while the other slowly stroked the ego, and together they bookmarked two extremes with one memorable show.

Of course, you could take things down to the basics: Blonde Redhead's Kazu Makino came onstage with two glasses of white wine. Thee Oh Sees' John Dwyer's liquid of choice was the loogie, which he launched in a spray above him repeatedly (amazingly never hitting himself or nearby locomotive drummer Mike Shoun, although I wouldn't want to clean the stage after their show). But both bands have played enough that their sets are supertight -- the only lulls in energy coming between bands when Makino's keyboards needed extensive tweaking. And the evening's other constant -- a very excited fan by the stage, throwing his hands skyward like he was praising Jesus the whole night -- helped cement the idea that you can indeed appreciate right- and left-brained music in the same night.

Lyrics Born Drops New Mixtape, Appears at Stern Grove

If Lyrics Born ever gets tired of rapping, he could easily be a comedian. The opening skit from his new mixtape, The Lyrics Born Variety Show Season Pho, in which LB goes to a Vietnamese restaurant and tries to order some soup ("Pho"--get it?), is LMFAO funny. LB's obviously got a sense of humor, but he conceals it well with his deadpan tone. The mixtape proper is a bit more serious, collecting some of LB's recent appearances, like J-Boogie's "Revolution," and the Mighty Underdogs' "Ill Vacation"; new material like "Stay Professional," "Pop Campaign," and "Block Bots" (featuring Clyde Carson); exclusive remixes; mashups; sneak peeks from LB's next full length As You Were; and more hilarious skits.

Speaking of LB, he and his "Re-View" appear at the Stern Grove Festival July 26, along with The Mighty Underdogs--which may well turn out to be a watershed moment for homegrown hip-hop.

One More Michael Jackson Tribute this Friday

If "don't stop 'til you get enough" is your personal philosophy regarding Michael Jackson tributes, here's one which should be totally off the wall: This Friday, July 17, the Shattuck Down Low  hosts what they're calling the "official" MJ Bay Area tribute party.

DJ Icewater spins Gloved One classics (and hits from the 80s and 90s) all night, plus live performances by Broadway star Trevor Jackson and local hip-hop/jazz/funkster Kev Choice, playing with the Kev Choice Ensemble. Having seen Choice's homages to Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane, it should be interesting to see what he comes up with for MJ.

Mission Creek Fest Picks For 7/15: Double U, Colossal Yes, Nim

Colossal Yes

Tonight, the Mission Creek Music Festival hosts four different shows in the Mission. The Double U, headlining the Argus, wouldn't be out of place on the Ipecac label, with the band's monster math rock soundtracks for (as one Portland Mercury critic astutely hints), menacing movies. The Lab hosts experimental leaning acts with the "drones [and] doomy laments" of darwinsbitch, who perform with Swedish act Nim, whose interesting audio visual approach comprises syncing found super 8 footage with sounds emitted by cassette walkmans.  Meanwhile Colossal Yes gets its Harry Nillson on with romantic piano jams at El Rio, and Sonny and the Sunsets blanket the Knockout with sunny folk pop.

Free Outdoor Show Tonight: Sic Alps, Meth Teeth

Posted By on Wed, Jul 15, 2009 at 6:47 AM

Remember those days when your mom forced you to play outside 'cause it was too nice to be indoors watching TV and stuff? Well with summer making a rare visit this week, we're telling you to go play outside--but you don't have to give up seeing music. Tonight San Fran's Sic Alps are performing with Portland's Meth Teeth (two band names that were meant to be typed together, no?) at Sutro Park at 8 p.m. (sharp! they say). Sweet lo-fi-psych-feedback-folk-fun-fun-fun.

If you miss this show, Sic Alps are also playing the Hemlock on July 23 as part of Mission Creek, but that'll put you back indoors and stuff.

And just where will this summery gig be hidden? Well we happen to have a map to the treasure right here...

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
