We just got word on a R.I.P. Michael Jackson trike ride/ wake tonight hosted by "Deep.":

"Trikeasaurus bike ride and then maybe a FlashDance (assuming people feel like dancing). We'll start the ride at 7 at Dolores Park. We'll be riding. I'll probably be updating our location via SMS*
We'll be at Ferry Plaza at 8:30. If people are there we'll stop there. LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK. AND REQUESTS. I have a ton of MJ & the Jacksons that I love to play (as you know) but lemme know what you want to hear."

**UPDATE: Now there's news of a Goodbye Michael flashmob at Justin Herman Plaza, 6:30 p.m.-???

****UPDATE: "Renegade Dance Vigil. Alamo Square @ 7ish. BYOB and some Warm Threads, could get windy" These folks have a good sound system, generator, the whole 9 yards...

**UPDATE: Contributor Evan James writes, "Tiara Sensation is doing a drag show on Monday at the Stud called Bad: a Tribute to Michael Jackson. Oddly enough they planned it before his death."

What's Your Favorite Michael Jackson Memory?

Posted By on Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 3:53 PM

All right, time to remember Michael Jackson in style. We're opening up All Shook Down to your favorite Michael Jackson and Michael Jackson-related memories. Pull from any time period you wish--The Jackson 5, Captain EO, Neverland... walking on the Golden Gate Bridge...

...Whatever it is, we'd like to hear your stories here.

I remember taking a "Thriller" dance class through the local Parks & Rec when I was a kid. Four weeks of trying to cock my shoulder and shuffle my feet like a zombie with a room full of the equally fully uncoordinated. Were a very ungraceful group of undead. Thankfully, those were in the years before YouTube.

Grim news in celebrity deaths today. Looks like Michael Jackson died of a heart attack in Los Angeles after being rushed to the hospital in a coma. The King of Pop was 50 years old. Along with today's news about Farrah Fawcett's death, we can now officially say a little part of our youth has gone to an early grave too. If you hear of MJ wakes around the city, please post the info below.

Festival News: Budget Rock in S.F., More Mission Creek

Posted By on Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 11:42 AM

budget_rock_8.jpg
Budget Rock, the Bay Area's trashy garage rock fest, comes back to this side of the bridge for its eighth year on October 22-25. The rock 'n' roll weekender has called the Stork Club home for the past couple years, but San Francisco folks should be stoked to hear the 2009 party will return to Bottom of the Hill, with additional shows at Thee Parkside and the Eagle.

We're still trying to get info on 2009's Mission Creek Music Fest, which seems to be cutting its lineup announcements really close this year. Not sure what's going on over at camp MC, but they added some hints to their Web site: this year's lineup includes Evangelista, Ann Magnuson, Jessie Evans, Shogun Kuntoki, William Winant/Weasel Walter/ Moe! Staiano Trio, Pop Noir, Ink Blots, Nacotheque, Juan Son, Curly Lou/Clara Gustavson, Dead Meadow, Xoel Lopez, Miranda Lee Richards, and Extra Action Marching Band. Sadly, there's nothing hinting at the return of Vincent Gallo and the ballerinas.

Track of the Day: Brock Van Wey

As heavy workloads and hectic urban lifestyles work to compress your brain matter until you're about to implode, you can always turn to good music to help slow your roll. San Francisco electronic artist Brock Van Wey (aka bvdub) connects your ears to helium atmospherics, so your head can float above it all -- even as your feet shuffle to his beats. His tracks come on like a trance, with the sounds of ocean waves and subdued seagulls blending into warm waves of droning synth melodies. Check out  "Mingtian",
a gentle techno tune that performs an aural massage inspired by Van Wey's "sadness and daydreams." He recently released a full-length record, White Clouds Drift On and On, perfect for carefree cumulus gazing.

New Netta Brielle Video

Post-makeover: Netta Brielle

Berkeley's Netta Brielle -- aka MC Netta B -- announced she liked graffiti-writing, skateboarding types on her last video, the Traxamillion-produced "Dirty Boyz."

On her new video, "Inseparable," she flips the script 180 degrees -- donning a black cocktail dress, and delivering a romantic ballad over a sparse piano background. Clearly, Brielle is much more versatile and way more talented than anyone expected. Peep the video here.

Experiencing a Virtuoso

Posted By on Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 10:33 AM

Karriem Riggins
  • Karriem Riggins

Yoshi's original Oakland spot was the place to be last night. Loads of scenesters were in the house, from ABB records honcho Beni B to KPFA's Weyland Southon to SF's beloved DJ RasCue to hip-hop professor Dawn-Elissa Fischer to photographer/videographers Brian Cross and Eric Coleman.

The occasion? The Karriem Riggins Virtuoso Experience, featuring pianist Mulgrew Miller and a very special guest, legendary DJ Pete Rock. Having stayed for both the 8 and 10 pm performances, I can report that Riggins -- who's played with everyone from Common to Diana Kraal to Herbie Hancock to Talib Kweli -- is indeed a virtuoso. As jazz drummers go, there aren't many current players better than him -- which is saying a lot, since the skill level for skin-pounders in that genre tends to be pretty high. Riggins handled complex rhythms with almost-casual flair, while his quartet played a succession of breakbeat "standards."

The highlight of the evening, however, happened when the band exited the stage, and Riggins and Rock "dueted," with Riggins tapping out live accompaniment to the records Rock spun. Riggins even busted a rhyme at one point -- which I don't think I've ever seen a jazz drummer do. The late show was more solid than the early show, which bodes well for tonight's repeat performance, also at Yoshi's -- this time featuring Common's DJ, Dummy. Click here for ticket info.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
