Track of the Day: Jan & Dean

Posted By on Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 11:10 AM

I've listened to this track multiple times and I still don't understand what a "Fan Tan" is exactly. With all the drugs going around Los Angeles between 1965 and 1968, though, is it any wonder singers Jan & Dean don't make a whole lotta sense? The song is just one of many "rainbow-wrapped" ditties available on the latest Nuggets box set in the lost garage rock series, this one called Where the Action Is! Los Angeles Nuggets 1965-1968. A mix of sunshiney AM radio tunes, unreleased tracks (by the Doors, Captain Beefheart, the Bryds, Love), and artists that have flown lower under the radar (The Seeds, The Electric Prunes, The Peanut Butter Conspiracy) have been compiled into a 4-CD box set. Sample some of the psychedelic folk here.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
