The much discussed Neil Young Archives box set collects nine years of his work into one volume, which hits stores today. (A second volume will follow). To hear a younger Young, fans can time travel through this span of recordings made between 1963-1972, when he was performing with The Squires, Buffalo Springfield, Crazy Horse, CSN&Y, and of course solo.

Here's one tune from the vault: a previously unreleased version of "Dance Dance Dance" recorded with Crazy Horse.

Free downloads are the new mixtapes. Almost every day, it seems, there's a new one that either introduces listeners to an emerging artist and/ or offers fresh music (some of which could never be released commercially due to clearance issues). Works for you, works for me, good for the environment; no more wasted plastic, and no more struggling with adhesive to open the case.

The download du jour is J-Billion and P-Funk's The One Take Mix-Tape, available here. It's a sixteen-track masterpiece, also featuring DJ Ant One, courtesy of your friends at 24 Karat Milkcrate. And in case you were wondering about the eminently buzzworthy Mr. Billion, SF's "illest rapper with a day job," and a proud representative of SF's Hufset crew, peep an interview with him here.

The 13th Annual Mission Creek Music and Arts Festival is just a little over a month away, but the fest's headquarters have been mum about the full list of bands and venues that are involved this year. The Web site advertises that the organizers are still taking submissions for bands, and so far only small announcements have come out about venues and artists booked to perform.

The Knockout lists some good indie pop/indie folk/heavy rock during Mission Creek's run July 15-25.

Acoustic Yogi: Michael Franti - EKAPHOTOGRAPHY

  • Acoustic Yogi: Michael Franti

Nothing's more peaceful than yoga. And nothing's more powerful than music. If that sounds like an appealing combination to you, then you'll want to be at the appropriately-named Green Ballroom of the SF War Memorial & Performing Arts Center on June 6 for a full day of - you guessed it - yoga and music, with proceeds benefiting the free Power to the Peaceful concert in Golden Gate Park.

The day begins with a morning yoga session (bring your own mat), led by Sianna Sherman and Diana Vitantonio, accompanied by live acoustic music by Michael Franti. After a short break, Franti returns for another set, with special guests TBA, DJs, a silent auction and "yummy finger foods." Suggested donation: $40 for yoga, $50 and up for afternoon gala. More info is here and here.  Oh, and save this date: Sept 12 -- when PttP returns for its 11th edition.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
