Recurring Club Night? Every Saturday
Better Than: The hyphy movement.

HYP made a rather debonair premiere last Saturday at Club Eight with a fully catered pre-party, free drinks, and nearly naked servers.

The overall objective of the night is to fill a void in the gay club scene by providing a hip hop party that promoters feel is unrivaled on the main Castro drag. The club night also attempts to create a melting pot of diverse and mixed crowds, meaning a rich blend of straights and gays from all races; however, Saturday night indicated a predominantly gay crowd.

The event's pre-party was no indication of what the night held for it' patrons. Sophisticated appetizers displayed glowing trays with names like "Cabernet Braised Niman Ranch Short Rib Daube on Sweet Potato Cake" or "Hamachi in Coronet with Sake Jalapeno" sharply contrasted their servers who wore only black briefs with HYP prominently stamped on their rears.

The beautiful and fabulous Ms. Joyo Velarde (better known as Mrs. Lyrics Born) has finally announced a digital drop date for her first official solo project, a five-song self-titled EP available online on May 26.

With a full-length to be called Love and Understanding slated for release on Quannum Projects November 2009--or immediately after hubby LB finishes retiling the bathroom, painting the living room ceilings, cleaning the rain gutters, and mowing the lawn at their El Cerrito micro-mansion--the EP offers a sneak preview of what's to come, including an unavailable-on-LP track "I Need You Boy" (produced by dancehall legend Bobby Digital).

Watch the video for the single "Take You Home" here or listen to the track here.

Track of the Day: Ben Frost

Posted By on Fri, Apr 10, 2009 at 10:53 AM

Too many artists try to get heavy and instrumental and end up sounding like tepid shoegazers trying to hide under mountains of effects. Ben Frost is an Icelandic electronic composer whose music is beautifully chilling and mournfully dark, like the soundtrack for a great, cathartic drama where things slowly fall apart by the end. His song "Theory of Machines"  is textured with low drones and percolating synth bits, creating dissonance between dreamy atmospherics and sinister bass, all spiked with sizzling white noise that expands as the song goes along. (Think Mogwai with a tiny dash of Wolf Eyes..although the dude is also a Michael Gira fan, made obvious by his track called, well, "We Love You Michael Gira."). I post a lot of new songs on this blog, but I give "Theory of Machines" an extra special seal of approval.

Wavves Adds Second, Free Show on Monday

For those who can high-tail it out of work early on Monday, the blog-beloved lo-fier Wavves will play a free show at Aquarius Records at 5 p.m. With all the play he's been getting on KUSF and in the press, I'd say get there way before 5 or suffer the fate of watching San Diego's Robert Pollard progeny from outside the record store's giant windows.

Krip-Hop and Homo-Hop Take a Step Forward

Deep Dickollective rock the mic at SF Pride, 2005 - RICK GERHARTER

Boy, am I ignorant. All this time, I had been thinking that Krip-hop was how members of the "Bloods" gang -who don't use the word "C"--breakdanced. To my blunted, Hennessy-laced noggin, this seemed analogous to Crip-hop artists (i.e. Snoop Dogg, W.C.) who "C-Walk," or throw up gang signs while sliding to and fro across the floor in canvas Chuck Taylors, spelling out the name of their set, just before smacking their bitches up, or engaging in drive-bys (and other forms of race-on-race crime).

When I saw the press release for "Diversifying Hip-Hop: Krip-Hop & Homo-Hop," I was all prepared to pop a metaphorical cap about the pop-cultural proliferation of gangbangers. However, the second term initially puzzled me. I always thought "homo-hop"  referred to emo-MCs like Slug, Busdriver, and DoseOne, who use nontraditional beats and abstract rhymes --  because, as we all know, there are no gay rappers, right? (Like many of you, I'd pay to see a naked catfight between Lil' Kim and Trina, but the thought of Lil Wayne and Baby swapping spit kinda made me sick.)

Hey DJ! Friday Q&A: Sergio

Posted By on Fri, Apr 10, 2009 at 6:38 AM

dj_sergio_2009.jpg

You have to know that if DJ Sergio is half as energetic behind the decks as he is answering our questions, you're gonna work off an entire pant size at one of his many gigs around town. The community radio-turned-club turntable king loves the disco. He loves the nightlife. He's got to boogie....Action? He's got so much to give.

Sergio infects San Franciscans with incurable cases of Saturday Night Fever, whether folks are catching him through the radio speakers on KALX, as he's reviving the '70s at Deco, or when he offers refuge from Market St. madness at the Triple Crown and Cafe Flore. The guy keeps a vampire's schedule, but we're most excited about his brand newish party, Go Bang!, which caught fire a couple weeks back and returns at the end of the month (April 25--start doing your stretches now). That particular soiree of sweat brings a little ADDA to the dancefloor. What's ADDA? Well, since you asked...

Club night(s): April 25th & every 4th Saturday Monthly @ Deco Lounge (Larkin & Turk) is Go BANG! Atomic Dancefloor Disco Action! This is the FUN party friends and I are throwing that I've really been focusing on! Check us out on Facebook or MySpace.

Disco Doggies happy Hour with Alona, Wednesday weekly @ Triple Crown, 6-10 p.m.

KiNkY BeAtS @ Café Flore Friday weekly, 10 p.m.- 2 a.m.

KALX 90.7FM radio show Saturday weekly, 3-5:30 p.m., and I've posted my setlists & recordings of my shows since 2000 on my newsletter/group.

I am also a proud member of the Sweater Funk family! Sunday weekly @ Li Po Lounge, 9 p.m.- 2 a.m. I don't play at the party very often, but I do go support them, and appreciate this amazing musical night & movement! This is one of my favorite weekly parties.

My favorite monthly party, though, is Go BANG! Next one Saturday April 25!!

10 Things To Do This Weekend For Under $10

Posted By on Fri, Apr 10, 2009 at 6:13 AM

sweater_funk.jpg

Weekend, yay! Broke, sucks! For those being so heavily taxed on your corporate bonuses that you can barely afford the Cuvée at Jardiniere, don't go slitting your wrists with diamond cuff links. There are plenty of options for entertainment that allow you to keep half of that $20 in your pocket. Below, a couple of our top selections.

1. Perpetual Indulgence (Friday)
Every Friday's a good one in our minds, given that we were raised in a heathen household. But for those seeking to spend this weekend's Easter festivities in the presence of nuns, Yerba Buena hosts "Under a Full Moon: 30 Years of Perpetual Indulgence." The event pays homage to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, our city's signature artist provocateurs, our Ladies of the Pasty Faces and political hearts who entertain your socially conscious side. Tonight's Good Friday shebang includes a "grand procession, breaking of the seal, public veiling ceremony" and DJing from Charlie Horse's Bearzbub. (8 p.m., $7)

2. The Never-ending Happy Hour (Friday)
If you're looking for a plan that will keep you occupied from quittin' time to the midnight bell toll, L.O.W. (Look Out Weekend) offers an event spanning two clubs, two birthdays, and one party bus. The evening kicks off at Vessel starting at 4 p.m., transfers revelers to the bus at 8 p.m., and then hits Rickshaw Stop for Blow Up later in the night. DJs Jeffrey Paradise and White Girl Lust double as the birthday guests of honor, with Shane King spinning en route during the Ultimate Birthday Bus Banger drive time. The party involves a whole batch of other names on deck from Frisco Disco, LOW SF, and more. To get in on this free action, you've gotta RSVP. Shoot an email to info@lowsf.com.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
