Those going to SoCal folkster Devendra Banhart's sold-out show at the Independent a week from today could get the treat of some new tunes. After the release of Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon in 2007, Banhart has remained busy--dating and breaking up with Natalie Portman, recording a side project called Megapuss, and just recently, wrapping up work on a new record. The as of yet untitled album is in the mixing phase now. No word if the new tunes have caused the dude's scrotum to drop as low Smokey did.

Track of the Day: The Drones

Despite having a name that could set S.F.'s noise nerds in a tizzy, Australia's Drones are an indie rock band. But they're a damn good one, especially when frontman Gareth Liddiard is unwinding one of his heavily accented, highly tortured yowls over a mess of noisy guitar riffage. (Think an early, slightly less evil Nick Cave). But the man has mellowed slightly with newer releases, throwing some folksy jingles (and pop jangle) into the mix. Check out the song "Your Acting's Like the End of the World" here--a song that starts mellow, but becomes, like much of the Drones' excellent catalog, a boozy drinking song before too long. The Drones will be here April 17 opening for Band of Horses at the Fox (it seems like just yesterday that they were at Bottom of the Hill).

Moore Brothers Strike Mellow Gold

Gimme Moore: the Moore Brothers
You wouldn't know it from listening to all the AutoTuner-enhanced commercial pap, er, rap on today's "Hot Urban" stations, nor will you catch a gander from classic crock, er, rock outlets, but the American music world is in the midst of an acoustic folk-pop renaissance. And San Francisco is at the center of the mellow storm, having birthed and swaddled the quote-unquote freak-folk genre (a title which initially seemed cool, but is now starting to sound a bit limited).

The Moore Brothers'
new record Aptos--named for the sleepy Northern California surf town next to Santa Cruz--is quietly but steadily winning praise from music critics, who have compared the siblings' harmony-oriented sound to such soft rock/folk icons as America, the Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, and the Everly Brothers (what, no Don McLean, Gordon Lightfoot, or Jim Croce?).

I Heart Street Art: Count Your Blessings

Posted By on Tue, Apr 7, 2009 at 9:29 AM

Yesterday I got to hang out with a real live street artist. Caleb Neelon is his name, and Sonik is his other name. He writes, he paints, he appreciates. He's an editor at Swindle, he's lectured at Harvard Law, and he travels the world making art -- sometimes for galleries, sometimes for the street.

He's got a new book out called Caleb Neelon's Book of Awesome which documents a lot of his adventures, and he's currently in town readying an exhibition of new work, which opens Saturday at White Walls.

I stopped by the gallery today and asked him every tough question I could think of.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
