The Spits - JENNIFER MAERZ

The summer festival cycle is upon us quicker than you think, and while we wait on announcements from big guns like Outside Lands and Treasure Island (which has moved to the end of October) here's some updates on the budget bashes going on between now and the end of the year.

First up is the Total Trash Fest organized by the Rock N Roll Adventure Kids. It kicks off with a "totally unofficial night" involving the Black Lips at Great American and Knights of the New Crusade at Annie's. From there things get real official with the following events: Friday May/Thee Parkside (The Spits, Personal and the Pizzas, the Ebonics, Culture Kids, Wild Thing). Saturday May 2nd Afternoon Early Evening Show/ The Knockout (Ty Segall, Reptillian Civilian (Portland), The Guilty Hearts (Los Angeles), The Impediments). Saturday, May 2nd Secret Night Show (check RRAK's site for details) . That same night there's another "unofficial show" at the Hemlock.  Sunday, May 3rd Afternoon/Evening Show/The Knockout (The Flakes, The Rantouls, Shannon and the Clams, C'Mon Everybody, The Lateenos, The Teutonics). And the closing night show is Monday, May 4/The Knockout (Thee Oh Sees, Traditional Fools, Movie Star Junkies (Torino Italy), Rock n Roll Adventure Kids, Dead Ghosts (Vancouver BC)). Sounds like a whole lotta fun for a long weekend.

Further down the calendar, San Francisco's total psych blowout, Frisco Freakout  returns to Thee Parkside on 10/10/09. Can't wait for that one either.

Track of the Day: John Vanderslice

AUTUMN DEWILDE
  • Autumn deWilde
After recently pulling off a big celebration for his Tiny Telephone Studios' tenth birthday, local music man John Vanderslice is returning to the spotlight with a new record, Romanian Names. Vanderslice stepped away from the official studio for this one and went into his basement to sketch out the material that would become the 12 songs on the upcoming LP. The first single off Romanian Names, "Fetal Horses," comes with a kinda gruesome title (I picture those carnival fetuses in jars when I see the name) and the lyrics are no less creepy-- images of bloody, pixilated faces; lovers who will "break everything I had" and "turn a hanging man bad." Set against a simple piano melody, though, these words are less violent aggressions and more sorrowful asides from a man who admits he stole his lady from another man. Give the track a spin here.

SMC and Thizz Ent. Team Launch Town Thizzness

Thizznessman: Eddi Projex

Local indie turf rap outlets SMC Recordings and Thizz Entertainment (a label founded by the late Mac Dre) have teamed up to create a subsidiary label, Town Thizzness, combining SMC's distribution and promotional networks with Thizz' street credibility and word-of-mouth buzz. The label began with two well-received releases in '08: Beeda Weeda's Tha Thizzness and J-Stalin's Gas Nation, which may not have resurrected the hyphy movement so much as hinted that the subgenre never truly died in the eyes of its true fans.

Town Thizzness seeks to build on that momentum this year, with two new releases, G-Stack's Dr. Purpthumb and Eddi Projex' Got the Streets on Fire, out this week, to be followed by upcoming albums from Live Wire, Philthy Rich, DJ Fresh, and Mistah FAB. Now's the time to brush up on ghost-riding the Volvo, so you'll be looking like a stunna come summer, blasting the Yay Area blaps on your way to the nearest Wingstop.

'90s Night Tonight at Madrone Lounge

'90s Style Icons: the Teletubbies
Are the '90s back already? If so, is it too soon? After all, we can think of several dubious trends from that decade - grunge 'uniforms' (flannel shirts and scruffy faces), sugar-coated teenie pop (think Britney Spears, 98 Degrees, 'N Sync, Backstreet Boys), stomach tattoos ( i.e. Tupac's "Thug Life"), Thighmasters, "the G-Funk Era," Cross Colors, Kriss Kross, extra extra baggy day-glo raver pants, "mobb music," acid jazz, big floppy hats (a la Jamiroquai), white "O.J." Broncos, Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, Teletubbies, Alanis Morissette, Newt Gingrich, and George H.W. Bush, to name a few.

But as '90s nostalgia Website InThe90s.com explains, a case can be made for the decade's contributions to pop culture, even if that period somehow seems less cool than the '60s, '70s, and '80s. According to the Webmaster, "There are really two reasons for nostalgia of the 90s already. The first is that the majority of people like to look back a few years, as reference to see where we've been, to recognize where we're going. Then we all laugh at how naive we've been. The second, and perhaps more valid reason, is that people tend to look view their younger childhood until the end of high school years as a great time (even if it didn't seem so at the time)."

Perhaps the best reason for the '90s revival, though, is that '80s nights have been done to death. With that in mind, it's time to pull out those Fresh Jive pants, the Cypress Hill ¾-sleeve tour shirt, the Ja Rule doo-rag, and, yes, the mud-spattered Kurt Cobain flannel, and head over to Madrone Lounge tonight, where DJs Samala, Sonny Phono, Mr. Grant and special guests present "I Love the '90s," featuring "the very best cuts from the decade that brought you hi-tops and flannel, boy bands and Bud commercials." Bring in your "Best Worst Photo From the '90s" and you could win a free drink. And, as an added incentive for all you broke-ass fools, there's no cover.

HP Pavilion at San Jose
Review By Melissa Baron

Better Than: Come on, it's the Boss. He's the best there is.

Generations of Bruce Springsteen fans piled into HP Pavilion last night to see the rock 'n' roll legend live. For some--like the elementary-aged kids holding on to their parent's hands--this was obviously their first time catching the Boss live. But those who were taking their third, fifth, tenth spin proudly sported t-shirts from prior tours--some as old as the 1984-1985 world tour. As for the current merch selection? The economic crisis is not having an affect on Boss loyalty. Lines stretched around schwag tables where fan dished out $35+ for t-shirts, $60 for sweatshirts, $20 for CDs, and $15 for mugs.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
