Track of the Day: Yuksek

So you're sick of the same old Justice tracks, but you want to keep that block-rockin'-beats high going? Check out Yuksek, the producer/remixer who also calls France home and has performed dance floor magic on tracks by Lady Gaga, Mika, Kaiser Chiefs, White Lies, and Tommy Sparks, among others. The dude is into everything from house to disco to indie pop, but if it has his signature attached, the song's gonna get big, bold, and loaded with bass. Check out his excellent hit single, "Tonight" here, a little taste of what'll keep the dancefloor crowded this evening when he touches down in San Francisco at Vessel for a mini U.S. tour (only S.F., Miami, Los Angeles, and New York get to see live what the buzz is all about for now). Bonus: Free entry if you RSVP here and arrive before 11:30 p.m.

Punk Rock Extravaganza in Early May

Rock N Roll Adventure Kids love Trash...and Nutella

It's like Budget Rock came back to (mostly) this side of the Bay. The Rock N Roll Adventure Kids are organizing a Total Trash fest for the first weekend in May, a five night/seven (?) venue blowout of garage punk, Italian blooze, and (possibly) a knight crusade. The details (like unofficial shows) are still being worked out, but the bands they can announce are the top of the trash heap for sure. You say you like costumes? Lineups include The Spits , Nobunny, and Personal and the Pizzas (who'd probably argue they don't wear uniforms; they just have a look). Want your musicians in their everyday scruff? There's plenty of that too, with beloved locals like Thee Oh Sees, the Ebonics, Hunx and His Punx, The Pets, the Lateenos, Rock N Roll Adventure Kids (duh) and more. Plus there's an Italian blues explosion coming over to end the Monday night finale with a bang: Movie Star Junkies. Want more details? For now I'd stay on top of the RRAK's site, where one imagines further mysteries about the fest (tentatively scheduled for April 30 through May 4) will be revealed.

  • Back to the Roots: Junior Reid

Rumor has it that reggae superstar Junior Reid has signed to Oakland's ABB Records. Reid has been one of Jamaica's most enduring artists in the dancehall era, from his days as the lead singer of Black Uhuru in the mid and late '80s, to his solo career in the '90s--when he sung the anthem "One Blood" and collaborated with everyone from Coldcut to Guru's Jazzmatazz to Wu-Tang Clan--to his recent resurgence, guesting with The Game and Alicia Keys, and appearing on the remix of M.I.M.S.' "This Is Why I'm Hot." But don't look for a release anytime soon; according to one source, Reid's ABB album could come out in two months, or two years.

In the meantime, you can catch Reid live and direct with the One Blood Band at Berkeley's Shattuck Down Low on April 12, when he appears along with DJs Smoky, Kurious, Mr.E, Unite, and Boomshell. For more info, click this link.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
