MP3 of the Day: Oh Captain, My Captain

Posted By on Fri, Jan 30, 2009 at 6:07 AM

It's impossible to listen to the newest single from Portland, Ore. band Oh Captain, My Captain and not think of the Beach Boys. From the grand orchestration to the groovy harmonies, these dudes are sonic spittin' images of the Brothers Wilson & Co. At least that's the case with "Feet of Lead, Wings of Tin,"  a single the band released about a month ago. On the group's other MySpace offerings, their influences spread a bit, with frontman Jesse Bettis sounding very Chris Martin-ish in places as the music swells into angsty, melodic indie rock. But when the band's feet get heavy, their songs get heavenly. (Oh Captain, My Capain plays Popscene on Thursday, Feb. 19 as part of a Noise Pop opening party).

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
