Orson Welles completists should drop all other plans and attend the two programs titled The Unknown Orson Welles scheduled this weekend at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley. Archivist Stefan Drossler, director of the Munich Filmmuseum, will introduce both matinees. On Saturday, January 17, at 5 p.m., My Name Is Orson Welles will include excerpts from his television appearances, including rare Shakespeare footage and Welles' travel documentaries.. On Sunday, January 18, at 2 p.m., Unfinished Works by Welles features fragments from The Dreamers, Don Quixote, and The Deep (based on the same novel, Dead Calm, by Charles Williams that was made into a movie 20 years later starring Nicole Kidman, Sam Neill, and Billy Zane. Welles' version starred Laurence Harvey, Jeanne Moreau, Welles' companion, Oja Kodar, and Welles himself.).

Malcolm Gladwell on Obama: "Nothing Has Changed"

Malcolm Gladwell
January 15, 2008
Herbst Theatre

Better than:
Reading all those damn New Yorker articles from start to finish.

I wish there was some sort of operation that could transport a portion of Malcolm Gladwell's intelligence into my head. The New Yorker writer and popular nonfiction author is one of our more interesting cultural theorists, and just hearing him speak makes you feel, as my friend pointed out in the Herbst Theatre lobby last night, "like your brain just grew a little bigger."

After plugging away at his best-seller The Tipping Point, however, I'll admit that I enjoy hearing Gladwell speak more than I like reading his books. I read as many of his New Yorker pieces as possible, but the guy likes to go long. Very long. In his books it seems every discovery he's made about human nature comes with an exhaustive case study that could've been explained in a five-page magazine piece.

But that's where events like the City Arts & Lectures series come in handy. Last night, Gladwell was the featured City Arts guest. As he was interviewed by Salon's features editor, you could understand the nuggets of Gladwell's ideas in an hour or so, as well as hear him admit to his mistakes, expand his theories to the Bushes and the Obamas, and learn that when he lets his hair grow too long he gets pulled over by the cops far too often.

Yo! Majesty ... And Then There Was One

Posted By on Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 11:45 AM

yo_majesty_myspace_thumb_500x510.jpg

Two years ago at SXSW, dynamic lesbian hip-hop group Yo! Majesty blew away everyone crammed around them at the Beauty Bar. They were fierce on the mike, sharp with the insults, funny with the comebacks, and unafraid to slap a dude trying to cop a feel of their flesh. My gut was that these ladies were gonna hit big.

But then their album got delayed and delayed again. They went from a trio to a duo. And now, on the eve of their February 13 show at Slim's, more bad news: MC Jewel B will not be on this tour, due to "personal reasons making it impossible for her to travel," according to her publicist. And while the same PR company promises sole remaining member Shunda K can still bring it, when you cut a trio down to one, there's no way Yo! Majesty is gonna bring the same fire as they had that one Austin night all those months back. Too bad, as these women really had some momentum there for a minute.

MP3 of the Day: The Lava Children

What would it sound like if, instead of being shackled to a computer right now, you were sprawled out in a poppy field, your brain in a kite moving to a slight breeze above your body? Who really knows, right? But if I was gonna guess, I'd say Tulsa band The Lava Children come damn close to producing that sorta spaced out sonic bliss. They remind me of Italian psych-heads Jennifer Gentle (who in turn evoke more than a bit of Syd Barrett) with a dash of Animal Collective, but these Children leave both the darkness and the grandiose alone for LSD-dipped cotton candy confections. All Lava Children's MySpace offerings are earworm-worthy, but make sure to check "I Am A Pony" and "Fly Famous Mockingbird Excerpt" for starters.

Hey DJ! Friday Q&A: Alland Byallo

Posted By on Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 5:55 AM

allandbyallo_pressphoto1_thumb_400x266.jpg
When it comes to great techno, is San Francisco the next Berlin? That's a question bouncing around inside the beat-focused noggin of DJ, producer, and label owner Alland Byallo. Byallo is part of the highly respected [Kontrol] crew, who bring minimal techno and  "avant-house" to places like the Endup on a regular basis. He's hit the decks in Moscow, London, and Berlin and has been invited to such prestigious festivals as Decibel, Lovefest, and Detroit's Electronic Music Festival. He's warmed up the turntables for such heavies as Superpitcher, Trentemoller, and Modeselektor ... but he doesn't just spin other people's records. He releases them on his Nightlife Music label, and creates his own tracks for labels here and abroad. Long story short: dude is busy with the beats, including a show this weekend at the Paradise on Saturday, Jan. 17. More on this techno pro below.

Name: Alland Byallo

Club night(s): I am a resident of [KONTROL] @ The Endup and the Bureau crew.

Style(s) of music you spin: House, techno and everything in between. From deep and soulful to hard and dark... always with an organic vibe.

Name of a track you can¹t get out of your head: I've been singing the vocal hook of Arnaud Le Texier's "Serendipity" for the last month or two. I woke up with the vocal from Luomo's "Tessio" the other day. "Making Time" by Creation is another one that won't leave the head lately, but I think that's just because I watched Rushmore again recently. Damn fine movie.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
