Last month, the venerable hip-hop dudes from the Bay Area Quannum collective visited ShoeBiz SF to show off their new signature Reebok sneakers. At least one of those pairs are now available to the masses, as DJ Shadow just made his very own Reebok shoe available for purchase on his online store. The signature kicks feature the "What Does Your Soul Look Like?" logo, special shoe box with slip of authenticity, and a copy of Quannum's Stone Cold Winter Vol. 1 mix CD. Visit ShopDJShadow.com to cop your own pair.

The Trail of Dead Winds Thru S.F. in Mid-March (Be Afraid ... Be Very Afraid)

Arty Texas post-hardcore band ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead has a new album, The Century of Self *, due out in February. The group'll also be hitting the asphalt for a national tour, which finds its way into Slim's on Monday, March 16; tickets cost $18 and go on sale this Sunday, Jan. 18.

Hopefully the boys won't cause too much damage to the local drinkeries -- unlike this past New Year's Eve, for example, when guitarist Kevin Allen was arrested for going full-on Pete Townshend '64, smashing a (get this) Guitar Hero controller and destroying a pricey plasma TV in a fit of game-related-and-alcohol-fueled frustration. According to the Trail of Dead fansite, "Austin police were called to an incident late on New Year's Eve at 7th Street's Beauty Bar after a patron, later identified as Allen, smashed a television with a gaming accessory and threw the console at a passing car outside the bar." Hilarity! It couldn't have happened at a more annoying, pseudo-hip liquor establishment. -- J.G.

* Presumably named after the excellent BBC documentary mini-series by Adam Curtis; Google Video and/or Netflix that shit for some illuminating brain food.

Odd Nosdam to Release Soundtrack for Element Skate Film

If there's two things we can't get enough of, it's beats and skateboards. Element Skateboards along with Oakland DJ/producer Odd Nosdam came correct with both a few years back with the release of This Is My Element, a skate film featuring an original soundtrack with songs composed specifically for each skater. Nosdam's work on the T.I.M.E. soundtrack marked a huge step forward for skate film production, and will now be physically released on March 10 from none other than Anticon. Check out this free mp3 of "Fly Mode" for a sample. And if you like what you hear, you can catch Odd Nosdam spinning at the Rickshaw Stop on Jan. 28, and also at Underground SF Feb. 5. Visit Nosdam's MySpace profile for more info.

MP3 of the Day: Sole & the Skyrider Band

Posted By on Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 11:07 AM

sole_skyrider_thumb_400x296.jpg

Rather than separate the press from the public, experimental post-rock/hip-hop artist Sole (aka Tim Holland) is "leaking" his next promo straight to the fans. The upcoming Sole & the Skyrider Band remix LP ( featuring Thavius Beck, Odd Nosdam, Radical Face, and Andrew Broder, among others) officially comes out Feb. 3 -- not  the label he helped found, Anticon., but rather on his new imprint, Black Canyon. But you can preview the record for free by downloading this mix of personal/political activism and dark, noisy beats 'n' background here. The strings attached to these songs, of course, are that a little voice interrupts the tracks to tell listeners that this is, indeed, a promo. But it's a smart marketing move to allow folks a taste before they order the full meal deal. There are a number of good tracks on offer too, but "A Sad Day For Investors (Astronautalis Remix)" is especially poignant with its minor key piano snippets and snipes at the rich ("I hope if I ever make it to heaven they have a wireless connection).

Bang Data at the Elbo Room

What more could anyone ask from a Tuesday night in the Mission than discovering both a new favorite taqueria and a new favorite band? First the taqueria: Los Coyotes on 16th (in-between Mission and Valencia) is a welcome change of pace from overly-familiar Mexi-food joints like El Cumbre and Pancho Villa. Two words: mango salsa. That's all you need to know. Well, that, and the fact that their "super taco" isn't just a taco, but a meal. It comes with frijoles con queso, guacamole, sour cream, rice, pico de gallo, and shredded iceberg lettuce, as well as carne asada on two corn tortillas. It's pretty good, especially with a little habanero sauce, but add the mango salsa and it's out of this fuckin' world.

Los Coyotes' super taco not only tasted awesome, but makes an apt metaphor for my new favorite band, Bang Data. Like my taqueria meal, Bang Data serves up a tasty portion of familiar offerings - in this case, rock, rap, and Latin music - and just as Los Coyotes' mango salsa made their super taco something special, Bang Data flipped what could have been a predictable script, and made their set extra-memorable - they were hotter than habanero sauce on a jalapeno-marinated carrot.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
