A Golden Girls X-Mas

Posted By on Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 10:37 AM

Forget The Nutcracker. Nothing says Christmas in San Francisco like a bunch of wickedly funny drag queens acting out episodes of The Golden Girls. I'm referring, of course, to Trannyshack's latest series on the elderly Miami roommates. I caught the performance last weekend (two episodes long, with old school commericials --"Where's the beef?" -- piped over the speakers during the show's commercial breaks) and I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard. It's tough to pick a favorite -- between ditsy, blank-eyed Rose, vivacious Blanche, and smartass Sohia -- but I think Heklina really stole the show as the droll, dry-as-a-bone witted Dorothy. "The Golden Girls: The Christmas Episodes" is running at a little theater (Mama Calizo's Voice Factory) through Dec. 27 and is so popular they've added 5 p.m. shows to the mix. Just be sure to reserve now, because many of the performances are already sold out. -- Jennifer Maerz

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
