Hey DJ! Friday Q&A: Claude VonStroke

Posted By on Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 6:37 AM

You may think your mom's cool, but she's got nothing on Claude VonStroke's mom. The local labelhead/DJ got asked by his mother to DJ in church (long story short: it was related to her thesis). From the pews to Berlin's Panorama Bar to the parties in Golden Gate Park thrown by his dirtybird label, VonStroke is spreading the skewed techno and house gospel 'round the world. The man named Barclay Crenshaw by his ma is busy this weekend: first there's the Saturday night bash at Mezzanine with Switch, and Sunday there's a dirtybird dance party in Golden Gate Park. Before you spent the weekend with VonStroke, get to know him a little better below.

Hey DJ!

Name: Claude VonStroke

Club night(s): motherbird Wednesday monthly in the Temple Catacombs. dirtybird in Golden Gate park (summer only). dirtybird @ Mezzanine.

Style(s) of music you spin: tech house, tech funk.

You have a dirtybird party coming up in Golden Gate Park over the weekend, correct? How have these parties changed over the years? Anything special planned for this one? Over a span of 5 years, these parties have gone from less than 10 people attending to many hundreds enjoying themselves with us in the park. The park parties are always a special place to hear what we have been working on in the studio. Almost every dirtybird track has been tested at this party before release.

What's the most interesting event where you've been asked to DJ? I've played on beaches and on boats but I think the most unusual was my mother asking me to play at church because she was writing a thesis on how techno music relates to religion.

Worst request you've gotten: To "Stop playing this garbage." In NYC of course.

How many record labels are you working on now, and what's in the hopper with each one?We have two labels, dirtybird and mothership. There are always multiple records in the planning and release stages on both labels. Our newest DB member J Phlip has a record coming out in a couple of weeks called Rumble Rumble. On mothership we just released a full length album by Catz 'N Dogz. There are lots of remixes and singles coming from that.

How do you balance your work as a DJ and running record labels? I barely pull it off. I now have some help in here so that makes it easier with a new label manager, but it is always difficult, especially because I have two young kids as well.

What other music related projects are you busy working on these days? Whenever i finish my second album I will get around to making some hip-hop beats i imagine. Right now, I am trying to get some new music made.

Best remix you've heard recently: Voodeux remix of Rodriguez Jr's "Pina Colada."

Musical mantra: Try harder than the next guy.

Question we didn’t ask you but you often ask yourself: Am I ever going to get to the gym?

Next time we can see you spin: This weekend at Mezzanine with Worthy and Switch.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
