MP3 of the Day: Little Joy

Who needs the Strokes anymore, really. It seems that band's members are much better off musically putting their skills into new projects, from guitarist Albert Hammond Jr.'s two solo albums to this new act Little Joy, with drummer Fabrizio Moretti, his girlfriend Binki Shapiro, and his buddy Rodrigo Amarante. Little Joy has the trio trading off on instruments on their eponymous debut record. The disc was produced by Nevada City's Noah Georgeson (who also works with Devendra Banhart) and Amarante guested on Banhart's last record, but the tie-ins don't stop there. Banhart's sweet Latin lullabyes have their parallel in Little Joy's bubbly ditties. But there's also a little bit of the Strokes' downtown cool in place as well -- just check out "Keep Me In Mind," which could easily be an Is This It outtake. On the flip side, tracks like "Brand New Start," contain a breezy ease and crushed out hope all their own. Little Joy is quickly becoming one of my favorite records of 2008--it's out for the masses to snatch on Election Day. -- Jennifer Maerz

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
