Oakland's High Decibels get compared to "late '80s Beastie Boys" by their publicist, but this awesome track "Miss Cindy" is straight up early days of Beck, back when he was just a funny little "Loser." The duo of Duke Johnson and Chief isn't single minded in focus, though, riffing on everything from country rock to hip-hop to Zeppelin blues and hard funk. It comes together in singles that'll instantly get you, as they rap, "loose off the goose." I can't wait for the full album, which comes out in early September. But in the meantime, keep track of these dudes through their MySpace page. (And ps. If you like what you hear, check out Seattle's The Saturday Knights, who I've plugged in this blog before). -- Jennifer Maerz

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
