Ode to the Local Rock Musician

By Tyler Callister

You never played sports, your arms were too skinny

The girls all ignored you or called you a ninny

So you bought a guitar and started a band

Cause you'd grown tired of sex with your own hand.

You were never a nerd, but never a jock

There was something inside you and its code name was "rock"

The sweat and the smoke and the dream in your eye

With just enough practice the girls would be nigh

Now it's finally your night, there's art in the air

It's time for a rock show, all the kids will be there

The lineup is dope at Bottom of the Hill:

Cervantes, A Black Light, Good City Lie Still!

You show up to the show, the girls are real fly

Chuck Taylors and velvet, and kids gettin' high

The crowd size only modest, but their cheeks cherry red

And the arch of sweet Jim Beam hangs overhead

Haul your gear up on stage, the moment descends

Look out on the crowd – it's mostly your friends

But the sound guy says "go!" and you whip out your guitar

And set it ablaze like the god that you are

No need for fancy lights, the crowd only wants you

The mics and the amps and the off-key notes too

And though back in high school they called you a shrimp

Right now up on stage you're no less than a pimp!

Then after the show you drink lot's of beer

You drink way too much and you're tummy feels queer

Your sweater is vintage, you don't want to soil it

So you pull it straight off and dash for the toilet

Last call rings out and you get a tiny chill

As one band suggested, this city lies still

The night offered magic and you did take part

'Cause nothing is greater than a life pursuing art.

Critic's Notebook

Personal Bias: Friend of Jim Beam.

Random Detail: Nothing is random.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
