(Nina Simone)
Local music historian Richie Unterberger is back with his amazing collection of rare music footage from back in the olden days (usually the '60s and '70s). Next Wednesday, April 16, Unterberger returns to the Page St. Library (1833 Page Street) at 7 p.m. for two hours of never seen before goodies from the likes of "Everly Brothers, Lulu, Jack Bruce, Dusty Springfield, John Cale, Nina Simone, and numerous others." Get there early, too. His events are always free, entertaining, and packed to the gills. -- Jennifer Maerz
In the grand tradition of putting out great podcasts, Stones Throw delivers yet again with Madlib's mix at their Hella International party from this year's Winter Music Conference in Miami. The set includes unreleased Madvillain remixes and material from the new Beat Konducta project. Bomb trees not included. -- ASD Staff Report
The Sundance Channel has signed Elvis Costello to host his own television show. Titled, "Spectacle: Elvis Costello With ...," Elvis will sit down with someone of cool importance for conversations and performances. Kind of like Jon Favreau's "Dinner for Five," only with one person and no dinner. Maybe they should go on each other's show and ask each other why Sundance and IFC are the exact same channel. -- ASD Staff Report
Bob Dylan has become the first rock musician to win a Pulitzer. Hurray, Bob! His prolific career has had a profound impact on culture at large, but apparently not as profound as the Washington Post, who took home six of those bad boys. -- ASD Staff Report
Eddie Vedder at The Zellerbach Theatre
April 7, 2008
By Christopher Victorio
Better than: Waiting around SoCal to catch Vedder. (Editor's note: Crazy CV flew up just for the show. That's devotion.)
Download: Bit torrents of Eddie's work. Then donate a hour of time to community service.
The empty box of Corona sat in front of the man, who sat on a lone stool onstage with the spotlights trained on him. A small desk light kept sheet music illuminated on a stand and a tape recorder with its giant wheels lay motionless on a crate.
Eddie Vedder sat on that stool as a sold-out crowd roared and cheered at Berkeley's Zellerbach Theatre, and with that the Pearl Jam front man kicked off the third stop on his April Fools Solo West Coast Tour.
Cam De Leon "Happy Pencil Goes to Hell"
If you have seen the cover of any of Tool's earlier albums, you will be familiar with the work of Cam De Leon. He was born in Modesto, CA, and I'm sure he's happy he's out. He has also done work on The Ghostbusters and a host of other movies. He has a really killer style, and his work is what I associate the most with Tool. They have had some great art on their albums, but I think Cam's fit the best. It looks like you can get a free mini-print whenever you order a limited one. This one is limited to 100, signed and numbered. Get It Here
