Jerky Chicken

Because I just can’t call it “Jerked Chicken” and keep a straight face!

The “Jerk” style of cooking comes to us from Jamaica. The term “Jerk” actually comes from the term “Jerky,” which comes from the Spanish “charqui” (Char-key), which is basically meat dried over a slow wood fire. Today “Jerk” doesn’t refer to the cooking method, but the fiery spice mix that is rubbed on the meat before it’s grilled. The key ingredients in this spice mix are Allspice and dried Scotch Bonnet peppers (one of the hottest peppers on earth!). Other common ingredients include Cloves, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, and Thyme. There are countless combinations, so I suggest you buy a high-quality pre-mixed Jerk spice mix (that's what I did – after carefully checking the ingredient list to make sure I was getting the real stuff). If you want to make your own Jerk mixture, you can certainly...

All-Glass Diet, Knitted Foodstuffs And The Obesity Virus: Lardasses Unite!

Posted By on Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 2:27 PM

knitted_hamburger.jpg

Good news for the 97 million or so obese or overweight Americans! It's not just that you're fat, you might be sick too. Newly-minted research out of Louisiana State University confirms what many lardasses have been saying for years: 'It's not my fault! You gunna finish that?'

Researchers say a staggering 30 percent of obese people are infected with the adenovirus-36 virus, otherwise known as the 'I'm-just-big-boned' virus, though the jury is still out on whether it actually causes your hand to repeatedly stuff fistfuls of french fries into your gaping maw.

And the best news yet? It's contagious too, so you may not have to spend the rest of your life fat and lonely after all, or at least not lonely. So scootch that caboose over and whip up another batch of fried twinkies because you might have company.

Of course, if you're still hell-bent on slimming down, we have a suggestion: stick to the non-edible foodstuffs (adorable and delicious), or do like this couple and switch to the hot new all-glass diet. Who knows, you might even make a few bucks on the side.

Chronicle Foodies Celebrate Herbs, Master Gardeners

Posted By on Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 12:17 PM

chronicle_garden.jpg

Battling weak soil, weeds, wind, birds and a "cluster of black syrupy stuff," which turned out to be black aphids, the Chronicle foodies celebrated their rooftop garden's fourth birthday with a herb-inspired lunch, proving once and for all that even newspaper writers can grow stuff.

Well, not exactly. The garden had to be rescued from the brink of annihilation six months ago by a well-wishing group of "master gardeners," which, just for the record, aren't "righteous" or "egocentric." Is that kind of like "master baiters"? Seriously, I had no idea master baiters existed either. Thank you Google.

There's also a nice group of six recipes inspired by their herbalicious garden booty. (I'll take the Garlic-Chile Rib Roast In A Thyme Nest, thank you) Along with an herb glossary. Any strawberry cough up there by chance?

Bay Area's MySpace Top Ten

Posted By on Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 7:23 AM

Who are the hottest bands in the Bay? One litmus test is MySpace, where intrepid ASD reporter Ty Callister went digging and calling, turning up wonderful gems (like, who the fuck is SCWEEZ?!). Quotes from The Pack, Secondhand Serenade, and more after the jump. -d2

The Bay's Top Ten on MySpace

By Ty Callister

Almost a decade ago, Napster scared the living shit out of the music industry (or at least the suits at the top of it). But those who saw the web as the perfect medium to promote music embraced the internet. Yes, it could still be used to pirate music, but it could also be used as an unprecedented tool for promoting an artist and networking with clubs and other artists, and this in turn could actually help an artist sell music.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
