Youth Lagoon: Show Preview

Wednesday, Apr 11 2012

The Year of Hibernation is the best possible title for Youth Lagoon's first full-length. But another good one would have been Record About the Emotionally Draining Confusion, Desperation, and Nostalgia That You Can Feel Even When You're Only Something Like 22. As crafted by Boise citizen, college dropout, and ex-Urban Outfitters employee Trevor Powers (Guess which two of those titles he recently acquired for the band's sake), Hibernation is a slow, melancholic affair that sounds like something crafted in a bedroom. (It was.) Melodies have been brushed with reverb, lyrics turn potential histrionics into finely tuned scenes, lo-fi electronic beats bring many songs to their climax, and Powers allows an occasional glimmer of joy to infiltrate his reticent, boyish voice. In a recent interview, the Youth Lagoon front man stressed that he doesn't consider himself a lonely person — this album is just about him being in a different head space — but Hibernation sure could have fooled us.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
