Your Flag on the Marble Arch

Wednesday, Nov 5 2008
The Pantheon, Michaelangelo's David, and London's Marble Arch are made of Carrara marble; it's been a precious art medium for millenia and it all comes from a single town in midwestern Italy. At "Carrara," photographer William Wylie doesn't exactly show why. He hasn't taken glamour shots of famous edifices. Instead, he's photographed the rock in its rawest form, just rasped blocks hacked out of cliffs. In this series of "portraits" of the chunks, the artist seems like he's having a good time: Flats and shadows and dirt and workmen's accessories are always fun for camera folk. Each one comes with a ready-made past, present, and future, get it? Wylie's genuine love of the massive blocks' aching potential is obvious, though.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
