Wonder Land

Wednesday, Feb 20 2008
This is getting ridiculous. You don't even have to be a geek to get excited about WonderCon anymore, and that just doesn't seem right. Too many movie stars are on the way to the big animation, sci-fi, and comics fest, for one thing: Brendan Fraser, Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, David Duchovny, and Gillian Anderson, plus television stars including Kristin Bell and Richard Hatch. These people are not beloved only of dorks; what goes on? However, artists who are a little more, shall we say, niche-y are slated to appear as well: Manga master Jason Thompson makes several appearances, and the guy who drew The Hulk for many years is on the bill. In between are the locals (MariNaomi), the young talents (Becky Cloonan), and kid stuff, such as a big presentation all about Gumby and a slew of screenings by the San Francisco Bay Area International Children's Film Festival. WonderCon stalwart Sergio Aragones of Mad magazine fame is coming too, of course.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
