As his art-pop ensemble's name — WHY? — would suggest, Yoni Wolf began recording as a riddle wrapped in a mystery. When he started out collaborating with odd nosdam and doseone, his work embodied the Anticon/Mush Records aesthetic of ambient washes, grit-glazed beats, and oblique MCing. But into the new millennium, he assembled a band and has increasingly sounded less like he's unraveling and more like he's unwinding. Wolf has been quoted as finding inspiration from the introspective twang of David Berman and melodic slur of Robert Pollard, and now he formally embraces these influences alongside dark confessional contours on recent release Eskimo Snow.
