What it Means to Be Of Color

Wednesday, Oct 23 2013

W. E. B. du Bois, civil rights activist, scholar, and co-founder of the NAACP, described the concept of "double-consciousness" in his landmark collection of essays The Souls of Black Folk. Inspired by "this sense of always looking at one's self through the eyes of others, of measuring one's soul by the tape of a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity," choreographer Joanna Haigood, who has studied African-American history since 1995, collaborates with composer Anthony Brown, multimedia artist David Szlasa, and set designer Sean Riley to create a performance installation called Between Me and the Other World at Zaccho Dance Theatre Nov. 1-3. The performance loops every 30 minutes with four dancers alternating various expressions of what it means to be of color in the United States. Brown's original score takes the piece from America's past to its present, referencing spirituals, jazz, and postmodern soundscapes.

Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
