Jenny Balisle's painting method is probably not a good idea. She layers her oils so thickly that it sometimes takes them two or three years to dry. That has to be wrong somehow, don't you think? To make the work at "Gesture," she let paint pool, she shoved it around with scrapers, she mixed things you're not supposed to mix if you want your paintings to look normal. But Balisle is an abstract painter, and stretching the limits of what paint can do is her purpose. At an artist's talk on March 13, she describes her process in more detail.

    Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday.
