Surveillance cameras can get pretty small. So when you put one on the nonbusiness end of your eyeliner pencil, it doesn't even interfere with your workflow. And the results are compellingly weird — it looks like the pencil is holding still and the eyelid is rubbing up against it. Kiki Seror's video "Modus Operandi 2005" shows twin tilted frames of women doing exactly that, extended to include eyeshadow, mascara, blush, and (surprisingly less fascinating) lipstick applications. The effect is hypnotic, not quite pretty, and reveals secret rhythms and shapes that exist unnoticed in most women's lives. At
"Men Performing Masculinity: Surgeon of His Honor," the cameras creep up on men — on their razors, for starters, to closely investigate the grooming habits of the male of the species. As an "unashamed feminist," Seror is interested in "the notions of masculinity held by men about themselves." If she manages to make that compellingly weird, someone give her a free mani-pedi.
