Van Hunt
Van Hunt performs Thursday, Oct. 13, at Yoshi's SF. 8 p.m., $22.
Two years ago, Maxwell drew widespread hysteria from R&B nerds when he released the sleekly sexy BLACKsummers'night. R. Kelly's back-to-basics Love Letter was greeted with critical raves last winter. Yet somehow the equally soulful Van Hunt remains overlooked. That wasn't always the case. In 2004, it felt as though Capitol Records was priming Hunt to become the next prince of neo-soul. His self-titled debut was even produced by American Idol's Randy Jackson. In the years that followed, though, Hunt's career stalled. Thankfully, his new LP, What Were You Hoping For?, combines Motown soul grooves, electro-rock, and Prince-style funk with superlative skill.
