Unhappy Endings

Wednesday, Aug 21 2013

Just out from McSweeney's, Lucy Corin's One Hundred Apocalypses and Other Apocalypses is a collection of short devastations that range in attitude and build in effect through what seems like an endless parade of experience: time-traveling, reviews of imagined movies, tongue-in-cheek self-awareness, rules for the end times – it's all here. The book's two longer stories are visionary, breathtaking; if you go, you should request Corin read at least one of them. She probably won't have time for both, though, as the evening will also include readings by MacArthur Fellow Yiyun Li and Peter Orner (whose dynamite Last Car Over the Sagamore Bridge was just released), as well as comedy by Caitlin Gill and music by the Yellow Dress. Admission gets you a copy of Corin's book.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
