World Affairs is pleased to welcome Ambassador Irina Bokova — director-general of UNESCO since 2009 — for a discussion spanning UNESCO projects around the world, in particular their programs to prevent violent extremism and tackle ‘cultural cleansing’. In the midst of the unprecedented humanitarian crises in Syria and Iraq, cultural cleansing is also taking place on a massive scale — including the intentional destruction of irreplaceable cultural sites. How is UNESCO using education to prevent youth radicalization, promote global peace, and protect humanity’s shared heritage?

Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
