Undead Outlaw Country

Wednesday, May 30 2012
Looking like the hillbilly cousin of Bela Lugosi-era Dracula and sounding like the infernal love child of Hank Williams and comedian Larry the Cable Guy, Unknown Hinson has been serving up his unrepentantly redneck brand of honky-tonk for two decades. The creation of studio player and music teacher Stuart Daniel Baker for Charlotte, N.C.-based public access show The Wild Wild South during the early 1990s, Hinson takes hard-drinking, gun-toting, two-fisted outlaw country to absurdist heights on songs like "Peace, Love, and Hard Liquor" and "Satan in a Thong." While Baker stays busy doing cartoon voiceover work as Early Cuyler, the balding patriarch of the Appalachian cephalopod clan featured on Adult Swim's Squidbillies, he brings his hilarious alter-ego to town when a touring Unknown Hinson plays The Independent on Saturday, June 10.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
