Trans Substantiation

Award-winning choreographer and dancer Sean Dorsey's strongest suit is storytelling. Beautiful lines and muscled skill characterize his work as well, but the drive of it comes from the story. Beginnings, middles, ends, richly described characters, and perfectly painted details are all standard with Dorsey – that's why his new project is so exciting. Uncovered: The Diary Project takes its narrative from the personal journals of transgendered people, notably the diaries of San Franciscan Lou Sullivan. Not every dancemaker could take this complicated, vital primary text and get onstage with something both concrete and moving, but Dorsey, we have no doubt, does it good justice. Dancers Brian Fisher, Juan de la Rosa, and Nol Simonse join Dorsey, while the score is courtesy a team of local trans musicians.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
