The American Cancer Society doesn't really know what causes breast cancer. ("We do not yet know exactly what causes breast cancer," from its Web site.) And if they don't know, well … crap. In her new play, Tough Titty, Oni Faida Lampley presents the story of a woman diagnosed, in spite of having done everything to "reduce risk factors," as the jargon goes. She ate vegetables! She exercised! She had a good attitude! And she got it anyway. Which sucks, but anyone who's ever been seriously ill can tell you that the disease is sometimes nothing compared to the people around you: They disappear, they give horrendous advice, and weirdest of all, they blame you. Lampley's protagonist endures, and continues her "willful search for grace."
