Tony Kushner Is Only a Drop in the Bucket

Wednesday, Nov 5 2008
Being a queer playwright in a lot of times and places has meant compromise: veiling your gay content, (What are you talking about? It’s just a couple of guys layin’ around the barracks together with their shirts off!) making it straight, or turning up the queeny knob for laughs. Luckily, those conventions have fallen by the wayside in favor of work that weaves gay lives into broader and more honest narratives. Theater Rhino has been putting queers of all stripes on stage since 1977, and "100 Years of Queer Theater" is a great way to get a taste of practically everybody. The festival features three series, the first covering 1900-1959, the second 1960-1979, and finally 1980 to 2000. Witness the evolution of content and craft in eight plays by writers including Joe Orton, Djuna Barnes, and Cherríe Moraga.
Wednesdays-Saturdays. Starts: Oct. 29. Continues through Nov. 23, 2008

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
