Todd's Texture

Wednesday, Aug 15 2007
Joanna Newsom is Mia Doi Todd on helium. Granted, Joanna Newsom sounds like any number of people on helium, sometimes even herself. But Los Angeles gloss-folkie Todd is an especially appropriate counterpart: Her voice is odd and sweet, and her lyrics touch political economics and household appliances, yet always come to rest on human emotions. But where Newsom's quick-change vocal syncopations make room for those long, long stories she has to tell, Todd stretches syllables and allows for the throaty vibrato and slow moans needed to convey her own poetic tales.

Todd performs at Penny Arcade, A Semi Acoustic Music Showcase with Bart Davenport and Willow Willow.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
